Lucia Fest in Cincinnati

Santa Lucia's Day is the beginning of the Christmas season in Scandinavia, a celebration of light.

There is a big tradition for celebrating Lucia Day in the Nordic countries and at Scandinavian Society of Cincinnati we carry on this tradition. We gather our members for the Lucia Fest in the middle of December. Children and grandchildren of members perform the traditional Lucia Procession while singing the Lucia song. Members get creative and bring an abundance of Scandinavian side dishes and desserts to supplement the main dinner items.

Scandinavian Society of Cincinnati is celebrating Lucia Fest at the Maple Knoll Auditorium on December 10th. Lucia is celebrated in Scandinavia on December 13th, and all around the Scandinavian countries people gather to watch the Lucia processions with boys and girls dressed in white, carrying candles and singing the Lucia song. It is common for children to visit nursing homes where they light up the day with Lucia processions and songs and music for the holidays.

We are lucky to have the Swedish choir in Cincinnati who will help us sing the Lucia song and entertain us with Swedish Christmas carols.

As the evening progresses, keep an eye out for our Tomten (Santa) who will have gifts for our younger guests!

Doors open at 4PM, with the Lucia procession to start at 5PM.

We will enjoy a potluck dinner. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided, and guests are asked to bring dishes and desserts to share. Do you perhaps have a favorite Scandinavian recipe that you would like to share? Traditionally the table is filled with Scandinavian foods.

The cost for this event is $10 per adult, and $5 per child. Friends and family are welcome.
To RSVP, contact Esther Charlton at esthersofn@aol.com or 513-923-3798 with how many adults and children and what you plan to bring by December 4th.

Children needed for the Lucia procession. We need more maids and star boys to participate, the Lucia bride will lead the way, and the choir will help us sing the Lucia song. It is a wonderful experience and a memory your children will have with them forever!

Email Scandinaviancincy@gmail.com if your child would like to participate. There will be two optional practice sessions prior to the event, and one dress rehearsal the day of. Costumes and accessories will be provided and no prior experience is needed.

We are excited to bring one of our longest running Scandinavian traditions to Cincinnati!
